OPERATING HOURSMonday to Wednesday: 10:00am – 6:00pm

Sunday: 10:00am – 5:00pm

Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) was established in 1971 by four climbers who got stuck in a tent at the foot of a glacier, eventually crafting the idea of a climbing supply store throughout the night.

They started with a volunteer-only workforce and today, they have over 21 branches all over Canada.

One of the reasons to shop here for your sports gear is that MEC products are environmentally friendly and strive to have the smallest carbon footprint. They’ve also ensured that the wool and down used in their clothing are cruelty-free and have been certified by Responsible Down and Wool.

Other ways they try to minimize their environmental impact is by having green buildings, having been the first and second retail store in Canada to adhere to Natural Resources Canada C2000 Green Building Standard.

With such a value-driven company, MEC also places its members as a top priority, offering exclusive seasonal discounts and updates on new inventory. Members are also eligible for a price-match policy and have access to one-on-one sessions with experts in the company’s products.

If you’re interested in becoming a member, all you have to do is shop at MEC since registration is mandatory upon checkout. However, you’ll have exclusive access to special promotions on ski and bike services throughout the year, which is a good thing in our book.

Other than the forced membership, there’s little we don’t like about MEC – they have competitive prices, strive to be green, and actively promote the outdoor lifestyle.

Pros

  • Members get seasonal discounts and price-match policy
  • All MEC products have a minimal carbon footprint
  • Offers professional bike and ski repair and maintenance services

Cons

  • Membership is required to purchase a MEC branded product
  • Physical stores don’t have as much inventory as online stores

Customer Reviews

Tanner Hadley had never bought climbing gear before and appreciated the help he received at MEC. This is his story:

“I came in today as a first time shopper, finally grabbing my own gear for bouldering. I was helped by a young gentleman named Jack. He clearly knew a lot about the sport and was very knowledgeable. All of my questions and concerns were answered politely and clearly. There was even a small wall to try the shoes on various sizes and difficulties of holds. Very pleased with this experience, I hope to see Jack on my next trips here.”

S. Landon, another customer, visited his MEC to have his bike serviced. He shares:

“This MEC was incredible when dealing with my old bike. The technicians were accommodating fixing it and knew the right parts to put on. Excited to get back on the road for the remainder of the summer and happy to come back if needed.”

OPERATING HOURSTuesday to Friday: 11:00am–6:00pm
Saturday: 11:00am – 5:00pm

Totem Outdoor Outfitters was founded in 1962 and has been serving Edmonton and its surrounding areas since 1972. It’s a family-owned business that aims to provide residents with access to high-quality sporting goods.

Totem Outdoor Outfitters prides itself as being store-based only, with no online store as a way to better connect with their customers. However, we feel like they should transition into the digital age and offer their products on a webstore.

When you do visit their store, you’ll discover that they have three main sections, namely The Sports Exchange, Rental & Repair Department, and the Retail Outdoor Store.

The Retail Outdoor Store features a wide array of outdoor equipment and accessories covering almost every sport or activity, whether you’re trying something new or have years of experience.

Sports Exchange, on the other hand, sells both pre-owned and new products with a seasonal inventory that keeps refreshing. Customers can bring in their pre-owned gear with the option of trading it for in-store credits.

While the store credits are valid for two years, you’ll only get half of the value of your item as opposed to selling it on consignment where you can receive 70% worth of in-store credit or a 60% debit payout of its selling price.

However, you may just want to visit Totem Outdoor Outfitters’ Rental & Repair department to help keep your current gear in check or to lease a few things for your next adventure. Whether it’s skis, snowboards, or kayaks you’ll find high-quality gear to take with you outdoors.

Totem Outdoor Outfitters also has a rewards or membership program that earns you points the more items you purchase, which you can then accumulate for further discounts.

While the lack of other incentives isn’t convincing for customers to sign up, if you regularly purchase sporting goods, you can accumulate big savings as well.

Pros

  • Offers equipment rentals for both summer and winter
  • Can trade-in or consign your pre-owned equipment

Cons

  • No online store
  • Does not give cash in exchange for pre-owned gear
  • Must have credit card for rental equipment

Customer Reviews

Def Tek went to Totem lookin for a pair of ice skates. He was happily surprised at the option of being able to rent them as he writes:

“Went to rent a pair of skates and was pleasantly surprised with the service. I have skated a total of maybe 3 times as a child and had the desire to try it out again. I was glad to see that there was an option to rent some decent skates for a good price. The young man working there was very attentive, knowledgeable, and even helped tie my skates properly. Much respect. I highly recommend this place for rookies and pros alike. They seem to offer many services like repairs, etc. I will definitely be back!”

Travis Kennedy, another customer, shares his experience at Totem:

“Great place to dip your toes into almost any new sports with used goods, or conversely go hard, because they also have a great selection of new gear. Seems to me like skates and canoes are top dogs in the store. Amazingly helpful staff as well.”

United Sport & Cycle is one of the oldest specialty sports stores in Edmonton with humble roots as a bicycle shop. Established in 1928, this family-owned business has since grown to a 110,000 square foot facility providing gear for over 30 different sports.

We like it here because of the various products that you can test out. You can do practice swings in the batting cages, try out a bike in the fit zone, and even slide some pucks at the hockey shooting lanes.

Now, if you’re in the market for a new bike, we highly suggest coming to  United Sports & Cycle to take advantage of their Body Geometry Fit Integration Technology (BG FIT). This is a specially designed system that helps you find the best bike to fit your body type and fitness level which will give you a more efficient and streamlined ride.

After you get fitted, you’ll have a plethora of bike options to choose from, whether you’re buying or renting. They have mountain bikes, electric bikes, fat bikes, and even used bikes as well!

As if that weren’t enough, this sporting goods store is also able to perform repairs on numerous athletic equipment such as shoes, rackets, skates, and hockey equipment, just to name a few.

United Sports also has something for die-hard fans, with a dedicated shop featuring discounts for all Edmonton Oilers merchandise. Although the fan shop seems to focus solely on ice hockey teams, they do offer jerseys and other merchandise from teams of both Canada and the United States.

Lastly, we’re also a big fan that United Sports & Cycle hasn’t forgotten their roots as part of the Edmonton community. They actively participate and sponsor over 200 local events annually, from triathlons to ball tournaments!

Pros

  • Has financing options via Paybright
  • Customizes uniforms and accessories for a variety of sports
  • Offers repairs for various equipment and gear
  • Body Geometry Fit Integration Technology for choosing bicycles

Cons

  • Fan shop only carries hockey jerseys and merchandise
  • Does not offer any hiking or outdoor equipment

Customer Reviews

Zachary Walters, went to United Cycle to shop for a bike and was happy with their speedy service. He says:

“Excellent service overall, they were able to find me a bike quickly that suits my needs well, despite the current supply issue. Received the bike faster than the estimated lead time. Would recommend United to anyone looking for a new bike or sporting goods.”

Kathy Schmidt, on the other hand, was shopping for a bicycle helmet with the staff at United Cycle helping her out. She writes:

“I got amazing service today getting fitted for a new bike helmet. Having had a serious spill last year I realize just how important the right fit is. My helmet really saved me!  The staff at United cycle is so knowledgeable and I truly feel they care about my safety and my enjoyment on the road as much as I do. Can’t recommend them highly enough!”

4.   Allsports & Cycle

OPERATING HOURSMonday to Friday: 11:00am – 7:00pm
Saturday to Sunday: 11:00am – 4:00pm

Allsports & Cycle has been Edmonton’s premier one-stop shop for sporting apparel and athletic goods for over two decades. Its 10,000 square foot facility is filled with high-quality pre-owned and brand-new sporting goods that has something for everybody.

One of Allsports & Cycle’s newest in-store features is their batting cage on the upper level of their store. No skill level or age is required since you can opt to have a fastball, slow pitch, or T-ball setup during your session.

Although they carry a diverse product line, their products and services are mostly focused on hockey and cycling. They offer both new and used equipment, tune-up services for bikes, and sharpening services for skates.

The service personnel at Allsports & Cycle can hone your skates according to your preference, from a specific hollow to a flat bottom V. Their technicians are backed by over a decade of sharpening, profiling, and maintaining professional skates.

Now, as for your pre-loved and pre-owned equipment, Allsports & Cycles can accept it for a trade-in or for store credit to purchase any other item in the store  As of the time of this writing, they’re currently accepting golf clubs, baseball gear, and hockey-related equipment.

To us, the best part about the in-store credit is that there is no expiration, so you can let it sit in your account and use it anytime in the future. However, intake of used items is based on what their inventory needs, and staff will still need to assess the item you bring in.

In case you don’t want any compensation for your used gear and are just interested in donating it, Allsports & Cycle is more than happy to accept it! They are currently a designated location for Sport Central – an organization that works to donate athletic goods to those that are financially struggling.

Pros

  • Accepts trade-ins and donations of used equipment
  • No expiration for in-store credit for pre-owned items
  • Has on-site batting cages

Cons

  • Products revolve around ice hockey and cycling
  • Doesn’t have a loyalty or rewards system

Customer Reviews

John Constantinidis went to Allsports & Cycle to purchase ice skates and received service that exceeded his expectations. This is his story:

“Ryan was an absolute pleasure to deal with. If management reads this review, then please pass on the recognition to him. I bought new skates for my girlfriend and Ryan took care of us from start to finish. He had an extensive amount of product knowledge, and answered all of our questions in detail. He went above and behind, and gave us a steal of a deal compared to all other competitors. Plus, they baked the skates for her and got them all ready to go. Also, they told us that we can bring them back anytime for adjustment. Ryan, and the woman working with him who I did not get her name…Thank you for making her first time buying a new pair of skates so enjoyable!”

Tyler Marshall, a regular customer, has made Allsports & Cycle his go-to place for sports goods. He writes:

“Over the last couple years Allsports has slowly become our “go to” location for our family’s sporting goods. Whether it’s Hockey and skating, bikes, baseball or ski/snowboard equipment, we have had amazing and knowledgeable service with great pricing to boot! Highly recommend these guys.”

Sportfactor was established in 1991 and has quickly become one of the country’s leading team sporting goods retail stores, providing Edmonton with the best athletic products at affordable prices. They offer gear, accessories, and apparel for a wide array of sports ranging from archery to weightlifting.

This store has centered its attention on providing equipment and apparel for schools, although they provide the same level of customer service for their individual customers as well. Whether you’re looking for gym equipment for P.E. or need supplies for your team, Sportfactor aims to be your first pick.

We like Sportfactor because they have made-to-order uniforms wherein you can use an online 3D application to create your own designs! So if you want to create a cap or a team uniform, these renders allow you to take full control of the design, which is sponsored by top-name brands such as Under Armour.

Sportfactor also offers a wide range of other customized equipment including gym mats, water bottles, sideline chairs, trophies, and medals, just to name a few. This makes them a great option for upping the ante of a team’s home court or for event organizers decorating a space for a sporting event.

We find it curious that Sportfactor’s winter selections are rather limited, with a greater focus placed on indoor sporting equipment. However, their range of customization options for products more than make up for it.

Pros

  • Has online 3D customizer for made-to-order caps or uniforms
  • Various custom-made services such as trophies and sideline chairs
  • Offers free online stores for local teams to sell apparel

Cons

  • Does not have any skate sharpening or bike tune up services
  • Limited selections for ice hockey and other winter sports
  • No loyalty rewards or memberships offered

Customer Reviews

Michelle Horncastle was impressed with Sportfactor’s speedy and efficient service. She placed a bulk order that arrived earlier than expected.

This is her story:

“I just wanted to send a quick message about how impressed I am with my experience with SportFactor. The sales staff, Zach did a great job at answering my questions related to equipment (particularly the specifics about which size volleyball nets to order).  Our facility ordered $3000 worth of equipment. The shipping was phenomenally fast— order was placed on Tuesday and it was received Thursday morning, and we’re in a different province than Sport Factor. This shows how well the entire  team is at providing fast and friendly service.”

Brandon Loveridge, another customer, ordered some items for his school’s PE class. He writes:

“Fair pricing and super speedy delivery!! I would highly recommend Sportfactor to any school needing PE equipment!”

Toe Stop Derby Shop is a locally owned and operated Roller Derby Shop. In comparison to other shops on this list, they are one of the most stores that offer this very wide range of products.

We think they are awesome because they offer some services for no additional cost. These services are individual consultation and fitting, free delivery all over Edmonton and surrounding areas, mobiles consultation and fitting, and shopping is available after operating hours by appointment.

If you are just new to roller skating, they are the perfect choice for you. And if you are ordering online, they will be extra patient with you since they want to make your experience and purchase easy.

We definitely recommend buying from them if you want your skates to arrive as soon as possible and if you want it to fit like a glove.

Pros

  • In-store shopping
  • Curbside pick-up
  • Wide selection

Cons

  • Some complaints about customer service

Customer Reviews

Here are some reviews from their satisfied customers:

“Absolutely thrilled with their selection, prices and customer service! I don’t know how but they had a couple Moxi Classic Gummi wheels still in stock, I have been looking for them for weeks and they are sold out everywhere! I ordered some purple ones and Claudia messaged me to let me know that she only had one pack left but had some green ones, I had a feeling this could happen due to everyone being sold out and honestly was expecting there to be none left at all. Decided to be spunky and get one pack of green and one pack of purple. Claudia replied back agreeing that it would be a good colour combo and said the order will be shipped tomorrow! Shocked by how fast she has put together the order and gotten it ready to ship, I was expecting it to take a few days since skate shops have been pretty busy. Also think she’s stayed at the store a while later to get the order ready as she messaged me after store hours, this shop truly goes above and beyond. Everyone needs to check out this skate shop! I wish I moved to Edmonton instead of Calgary so that I could visit in person, I guarantee I would leave with a million different colours of wheels and laces. I will have to plan a trip once covid is over! Also dog friendly??? And open late??? Yes please”

“Bought my first pair of skates ever here and the owner was so helpful! I have pretty bad feet (bunions and joint issues) and was having trouble finding info online elsewhere but one call to the shop and the owner let me know which brands had soft shell boots and were good for wide feet! Ended up buying the Chaya Sunset Beach and they are soooo comfy, pictured after using them (note for anyone that’s planning on falling, buy some toe covers so you don’t scratch your beautiful skates!). Highly recommend!”

House of Wheels is an indoor action sports centre in Edmonton and what better place to purchase your sporting goods than in a sports centre!

We think that House of Wheels is the best place to buy a scooter because they offer the best prices, selection and parts availability. We also find the knowledge of the staff very impressive. They really know what they’re selling!

They also sell a variety of skateboards and its parts, as well as BMX bikes. We like that they also know so much about them too, and they helped us get the best option.

Since being on wheels can pose some dangers, of course they also carry the necessary protective gear needed.

What’s great about them is that it’s a sports centre where you can try out your purchases. We think their admission prices are fair and it’s a great place to go no matter your skill level!

Pros

  • Sells scooters, skateboards and BMX
  • Great selection and parts availability
  • Fair pricing
  • Also an indoor action sports centre

Cons

  • Sporting goods limited to those with wheels

Customer Reviews

Here are some reviews from their satisfied customers:

“I was there on a Saturday with my daughter and a few of her friends for her birthday. There was not a lot of people there but a few families, as they are operating at lower numbers due to covid. The young gentleman that are working are older teens I am assuming and they were very well mannered, very helpful and know a lot about the equipment. They were patient with all my questions and helping the kids with their scooters. I appreciated them very much, and they were very professional at all times.
I had some problems with trying to buy a scooter with my card, and had to deal with some issues there, but got it all fixed in the end. The young man helped me to the end with the purchase and was very understanding.
The kids had a blast, there faces were red from all the exercise and they were exhausted. Perfect!
We will definitely be returning here. Thanks for the great experience.”

“Bought our 10 year old a scooter here after giving up on buying cheap kick scooters each year. Incredible selection with all the top rated scooter. Our sales associate spend 45 minutes with us as our son tried every darn scooter there. So impressed!!”
