mental-health-clinics-edmonton
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

In 2021, a Mental Health Index report found that isolation and loneliness were major contributors to mental health issues in Canada, with Albertans experiencing the highest levels (CTV News).

Do you live in Edmonton and feel that you’re part of this statistic in Alberta? Hopefully, today’s review of the best mental health clinics in Edmonton can serve as a good resource for you.

How much do mental health clinics charge in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, therapy generally follows the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta guidelines, with sessions typically costing around C$220 for 50 minutes, but the range can vary between C$200 and C$300.

Additionally, you can inquire about potential coverage through your health insurance or public healthcare programs, as they may offer financial assistance for mental health services.

How We Picked

Qualified Professional – The clinic should have licensed therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals who are experienced in a range of therapeutic approaches.
Specialisations – The clinic should offer services tailored to specific needs, whether it’s anxiety, depression, addiction, or other mental health concerns.
Evidence-Based Treatments – The clinic must offer evidence-based therapeutic approaches and stay updated with the latest research in the field.
Supportive Environment – The clinic should make patients feel comfortable, respected, and supported by the staff.
Accessibility – Does the clinic offer various communication methods, such as in-person sessions, phone consultations, or online therapy, to accommodate client preferences?
Emergency Services – It’s a bonus if the clinic provides emergency or crisis support for urgent situations.

Each team member is super friendly, kind and professional

“At Neuromed, each team member is super friendly, kind and professional. I feel like they really care about us. They don’t only give you treatment, they really care. They also patiently and honestly answer all my millions of questions and always make us feel welcome from the minute we enter the building till we leave. I have great respect for the entire team. Keep up the great work! As for results, my son started eye contact after day 1 of treatment. Now, he has increased awareness, makes spontaneous relevant phrases often, understands and follows 3-4 level requests and most of all loves to play with other kids. Plus, he looked at me and called mummy for the first time. I feel like I got my son back. Totally worth it!”

Begin Within Psychology was founded in 2021 by Sherri Lees, a Registered Psychologist specializing in women’s mental health. We appreciate that since then, she has helped a significant number of people with mental health concerns. Recently, Begin Within Psychology has added a new Canadian Certified Counsellor, Nasim Switzer.

While the business is located in St. Albert, AB, we commend them for working with individuals from all over Alberta online, even those living in rural areas. Nasim can also work with individuals, couples, and families from all over Canada. Overall, our team was definitely impressed with their client reach.

Additionally, we like that they accept in-person and online sessions because of the flexibility it offer clients. Although we found it challenging that their Saturday hours are limited and they’re closed on Sundays. However, we appreciate the evening appointments for clients who work in the daytime.

We also liked their free consultations, which are helpful when gauging the possible working relationship. Unfortunately, this only lasts for ten minutes, which we think is too quick for an adequate consultation.

As for their services, we appreciated that they work with various issues, such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, relationship issues, and perfectionism.

Begin Within Psychology has two specialists: Sherri A. Lees, a Registered Psychologist, and Nasim Switzer, a Canadian Certified Counsellor. We love that they’re both women, considering they specialize in working with women. Interestingly, that does not mean that  they only work with women. Rather, they also work with men, couples, families, and teens. They enjoy this work too!

Moreover, we commend their dedication to helping people. It’s evidenced by offering a free counselling session for the people displaced by the Northwest Territories wildfires.

Begin Within Psychology provides competitive rates. Switzer, who offers counselling, will have more affordable fees than Lees, who specializes in psychological services—but they are both still within a comparable range with other mental health professionals.

Lastly, we appreciate that Lees provides direct billing to insurance. We think this is a helpful offer, so you don’t have to think about the insurance process too much.

Pros

  • Available for in-clinic and online sessions
  • Reasonable rates
  • Two skilled counsellors

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Doesn’t accept cash payments

This is an environment where I feel safe

“I don’t typically leave reviews, however in this instance, I believe it to be very worthwhile. I have been working with Brian since 2019 and he has held me through a challenging process, knowing when to hold space, when to challenge my beliefs and always with a tenderness that his modelling has helped me to incorporate. The staff whom I have interacted with have always been courteous and understanding. Brian is a great resource and I can only imagine those who also work at the welling centre to be as such as well. In healing we require a team, this is an environment where I feel safe and started being able to put my recovery team together. Give yourself a chance and see if there is someone here you can work with and bring onto your team because you are worth it and life can be so much more.”

Tenille is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and intuitive

“Love all the staff at the Welling Centre! I’ve been seeing Tenille for massage/osteopathy for a couple of years, and every time I leave a session my body feels amazing. Tenille is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and intuitive when it comes to understanding your body and its needs. She’s got the magic touch. I’m currently struggling with a lower back injury, and Tenille has helped tremendously, including recommendations for home care. She’s a body wizard and I highly recommend her.”
